"Having used the Minolta Maxxum 7000 for years and then switching to Sony's A 700, I thought I was in Heaven and then the A 900 came out. I found myself in a bad place. Owning what I had thought was the last(haha) camera I would need to purchase. After using the A 900 I feel on my sword and the compassion of the Sony corporation to allow me to return my A 700 and purchase the newer A 900, much to my surprise they..." Read Full Review »

"I just bought this off a friend that did not like it, were both pro photographer's and I hate to say it, but I had to sell it to another person. Build quality is about the best thing going, but who cares if you can't shoot over ISO 200 without heavy grain. The metering is not quite there and the auto focus is very fubbly or inconsistant. The sony Raw file format is very hard to work with...." Read Full Review »

Incredible tool for any serious photographer. It has all the bells and whistles, and lets you decide which to use or not use. Powerful!!!!"

"Just up-graded from Maxxum 7D. I should have done it a year ago. In the week and a half I've had the Sony I've shot two wrestling tournaments, basketball, soccer and an indoor charity event. Very few out of focus frames even when continuous high speed shutter release. I use release priority when shooting sports and the Sony auto focus keeps up much better than the Maxxum. So far have sold images to three small papers.
Performance in an auditorium with all black drapes using flash was about what I expected. Since I mostly shoot sports I don't like to use flash. With the Sony I'm getting useable images even in small-school gyms with low-budget lighting."

"Mostly used to shoot weddings and portraits. So far it's proving itself up to that formidable task. Time will tell.
Nice mix of digital and analog controls. Huge, bright viewfinder, reasonable ISO performance for a high meg camera .... which I'd rather have than smeared looking noice controls. In fact, higher than 800 is quite possible if you expose the histogram to the right. In camera Image Stabilization is invaluable, especially with this high of a meg camera. In effect, ALL lenses are IS.
Super imaging machine especially when coupled with Zeiss offerings .... specifically the 24-70/2.8 and 135/1.8 (the 85/1.4 has a bit to much CA for my expectations of Zeiss.)
However, the Sony 70-200/2.8G APO Zoom is every bit the equal to the Zeiss 24-70/2.8, maybe better. For sure it's the best 70-200/2.8 I've used to date (including the latest Canon IS and Nikon VR versions). They need more primes.
The cheap remote didn't work and neither did the replacement. No biggie.
The only real con I have is the fairly unintelligent decision to keep the old Minolta propritary flash shoe mount. This camera is where they should have walked away from it. You have to purchase another part to mount a radio transmitter like a Pocket Wizard in the hot shoe.
Also, the flash units do not allow quickl compensation when mounted to the A900 ... forcing you to enter the camera's LCD menu to change the flash compensation!!!! ... not a good thing at all when shooting weddings and events. The best solution is to use the function button which at least returns to the last function in the LCD menu, but it is still a two button process before you can adjust the composition +/- ... IMO, this is a very serious oversight and should be addressed immediately with new firmware.
Despite all this, I still gave the Sony A900 a 5 star rating because it makes killer images equalled only by Cameras costing over twice as much."

"Bargain compared to the new Nikon D3X. Beautiful RAW image quality up to iso800. Pairs perfectly with all Carl Zeiss Sony lenses, which give smooth, lovely three-dimensional pictures. Fabulous for portraits with the CZ85MMf/1.4 and CZ135MMf/1.8. Cameras needs high-quality lenses to match the resolving power of the sensor. Fairly simple, intuitive controls that are comfortable to use, with just enough, but not too many bell and whistles. JPEG engine is not the best out there and could be improved, but RAW's have great dynamic range. Not as good in low-light as full-frame cameras with lower mp count, but all in all real photographer's tool."

"This is a very good camera. I had not been too much into Sony branded photo gear, until the A900 came out. In fact, I praise this camera not only for what it has, but also for what it doesn't have. I am so relieved about not seeing video capture or live view LCD on the A900. Come on, this is a photographic equipment of a high order, so let it do what it is designed for, and not do some awkward non-SLR specific functionality. Now, the body of the camera is made of metal, and it's beautifully executed. The pentaprism angular housing design give the camera a retro look. Now, my recommended general purpose lens for this camera is Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8. There is slight vigneting on the edges of the image, but only at certain exposure settings. So, I would have to sort of disagree with[...]not recommending this lens for full frame sensor cameras. Sure, the lens will work with APS-C sensor just fine, but it is highly usable on the full frame sensor as well. And let's face it, all lenses, no matter what quality, will vignete slightly at certain aperture settings. To put it short, the A900 is a great camera. If you like the quality of products such us Leica, Rolex, Movado, etc, the A900 will not disappoint. It is on par with the highest quality equipment available."
