"I have last years model with the rear triangle shock absorber(s.p.a.). Coming from my old Faggin, this is a real luxury ride! The fit is great, but the real plus is the shock absorbing ability -- this is a tremendously comfortable bike, yet it's torsional stiffness really helps the power transfer to the road. I ride on some fairly rough roads, so the shock absorbtion really makes a difference. I'm a big guy(..." Read Full Review

"About 2kg lighter than my 2001 Dawes Audax Giro (8000 miles on a Reynolds 631 frame and Tiagra gearset) - so why is it so slow? The stiffer frame doesn't improve power transfer - it just makes it less comfortable. Geometry is nice and easier to adjust with the sloping top tube. The headset is a big improvement on the old quill style. There were some initial problems with the front shift, but that seems OK no..." Read Full Review

"I have a steel frame Surly LHT and a Trek Pilot 2.1. I love them both even though they are very different. The steel frame of the Surly is very good for commuting on rough city roads. The Trek is fast on a smooth quiet roads on the weekend. I believe the writer of this review has not properly taken into consideration the different styles and uses of these bike."

I'm a big guy(6'2", 235lbs)and I have broken one rear spoke, which the shop fixed for free. Saddle is moderately comfortable -- I'm looking for a replacement. The only other thing I don't like is the handlebar, which it looks like they fixed on this year's model. Mine is the sharply bent bar, so right below the brake lever is straight, before it makes it's final bend -- this is NOT very comfortable, and I'll be switching to my old evenly radiused bar. From this picture, it looks like that is what comes on it now. No complaints with gearing -- the shifts are smooth and responsive. With the new bottom bracket design, BB stiffness is fantastic, and I rarely generate enough flex while mashing to rub the chain on the front derailleur.
I have about 1500 miles on mine now, and overall I think this is an excellent bike"
Pros:
"I bought this bike after riding a Cannondale SR 400 for 22 years. The upright positioning of the Pilot 2.1 (2008) is perfect. I am now negotiating hills with impunity. On the straights I am hitting 24mph without even trying and with a cadence of only 85.
This bike is a joy to ride. Going from a standing to a sitting position is easy, as the bike remains stable.
The shock absorption is fantastic. I feel none of the pain that I experienced with my Cannondale.
Additionally, there is enough leg room. I would recommend this bike to taller or larger muscular riders. It is just sensational."
Pros:
"I bought a 2008 Pilot as my first bike. I did not anticipate riding much -- my goal was twice a month. Once I got the bike, I liked it so much that I began to ride MUCH more frequently. I now ride three times per week for approximately 30 miles per ride, at an average of 16 mph. I am 40 years old, 5'11", and 200 lbs. This bike works well for me. I changed the seat and the pedals and added a GPS training computer. I feel like I got an excellent bike that has great performance for the money."
Pros:
"This was my first road bike since leaving road riding back in the middle 90's. Things have changed since then. Very nice to ride. My only complaint was the seat. I had a hard time riding long distances with it. I replaced the stock seat with a different model and my discomfort went away."
Pros:
"I bought my Pilot 2.1 five years ago as my first road bike and quickly became addicted to cycling every weekend and then started riding in events and races. I just bought a Madone for racing, but I love my Pilot and have transformed it into my commuter bike. I added a rear rack and will be commuting 20 miles a day on it, several times a week. So far, I'm really happy with its transition into my comfort bike. I did replace the saddle within the first year."
Pros:
"Trek has something extraordinary here. They've created a modern bike that is nearly ideal for conversion to 650B. The frame clearances and brake reach of the Pilot 2.1 enable this bicycle to accept 650B wheels with high volume 650x38B tires, while retaining the speed of a sport bike and the agility of the modern geometry. The combination of Trek's alloy frame and carbon stays and fork make for a rigid yet compliant chassis. Add the 650x38B wheelset with its slightly smaller diameter and large supple tires inflated to low pressure, and the result is a fast, comfortable, and nimble machine with all of today's technical features. The 650B converted Pilot 2.1 has a ride that is incredibly smooth, and sure-footed over mixed surfaces. And the bike just flies over rough roads, dirt roads, and even moderate trails. Amazing! It's a simple conversion, too, involving just a wheel and brake caliper swap. And for good weather protection, Trek conveniently provided threaded eyelets front and rear to make the installation of fenders a very simple matter. Yes,this is an extraordinary bike. There are numerous bikes from other companies with similar features, but no one else has this 650B capability. I'm delighted with my 650B Trek Pilot 2.[@]"
Pros:
"Nothing neg to say. I've had it for 18 months and I've had no problems at all. I've taken it with me on a few vacations and whether it's down south or in the hills of New England it rides like it was meant to be there. Except for sand. For the price it gives you a lot of reatures and bike for the money."
Pros:
"The bike is great! I recently received the 2008 PIlot 2.1 as a gift for Christmas. It is everything I could have asked for. Everything is fantastic, very comfortable[...]"

Cons:
"I have the '06 model of this bike. Its great for long rides with the carbon forks, stays, and vibration kill handle bars. With the triple crank ,you have the range of gears which makes hills a lot easier. The central Florida area has a few 6% grade hills which this bike handles with grace. Compared to my Cannondale R5 its a little heavy, but the ride makes up for it."

Bought it at a big saving through the government's ride-to-work scheme so I won't own it for another 9 months, so it has to be kept going, but Ebay awaits if I don't fall in love with it by the end of the year. good old Dawes is sitting patiently on its rack!"
