"Maybe my rocket is a lemon, I found it wouldnt keep a simmer flame without going out. Any breeze and the cook time is extended. When the fuel is low it wouldnt burn very strong. When the stove quits burning there is still more fule in the canister that is wasted. It works fine on a fresh canister with no wind. Not being able to use a windshield is a drag too...." "This thing is my favorite new gadget! I think i go on more hikes now just so i can cook Cup o Noodles in a cave! Ive only used it to boil water so far so i cant comment on the temperature control or scorching etc. but boil water it does. I had a liter or more boiling in less than 5 mins on max. I was further amazed that before my cup o noodles was ready this thing was cooled down and back in my pack. It is indeed a rocket though. I was a bit scared to turn it up all the way at first! It can be a bit unstable, you need a good flat surface and the larger fuel cans help. I usually brace mine with a few rocks and that works. For the price, you cant beat it!"

"I'm an assistant Scoutmaster in my son's Boy Scout Troop and I do a lot of camping and hiking and the MSR Pocketrocket is by far the best compact stove I have found. It's super light weight and the no muss no fuss fuel canisters are small and light enough for backpacking. I would recommend this stove to anyone."
Pros:
"I used to use the MSR whisperlight When the pocket rocket came out I bought it on a whim ( gift card ) I started using it and have never looked back. I've used mine extensively on high Sierra solo backcountry ski trips for years, if you don't mind snuggling with your fuel you won't have a problem. I've used this on mornings where the temp was below zero. The water boiled long before the fuel went cold. It is a little tippy with a full 2L Ti pan on it but you should always be careful where boiling water is concerned.
Two years ago my fourteen year old son and one of his friends and I did a 8 day 70 mile section of the PCT most of the time we were over 9000 feet. My only complaint is I wish we hadn't taken so darned ( you know what I mean) much fuel carried two extra canisters for no reason. I usually only boil water ( don't like doing dishes) so the high heat is not an issue. If you want simplicity this is the stove. I now own two. I have another gift card and I may soon have three."
Pros:
"This is a great little stove that easily fits into our GSI Backpacker pot set. We've scrambled eggs, cooked chili, and made sausage in these without a problem. We're getting a second one so we can cook more at once. Very convenient and very light weight."
Pros:
"I bought this stove to replace another one that I used and wasn't happy with. I should have bought this one first. I have used it for three years, several trips a year and it never lets me down. I thought the fuel canisters would be bulky, but they are not bad and the fuel lasts a long time. I carried a second canister with me last trip cause the first was low and never used it. My pots stayed on top of the fins just fine and I didn't have trouble with stability. Excellent stove!"
Pros:
"This Stove is very good. I always research products ALOT before I buy them, and still sometimes im dissapointed, But not with this stove. It is truly a great stove.
Very easy to setup, use, maintain. boils water VERY fast. and is also very lightweight.
It isnt too stable but so far I have had no problems with that, and in reality, its not too hard to stick a few rocks around the base to keep it from tipping.
Of course it dosnt perform too well in cold temperatures. If it starts to get colder, I suggest you get it going and do all the boiling you need to asap, the more you turn it on and off, the more likely it will freeze up.
with that said, I have used it in below freezing conditions, I just dont recommend it, get a wisperlight for that.
conclusion: great lightweight stove that packs a punch, if you are carefull you dont need to worry about tipping, never had it happen to me.
ps: i have heard people say they didnt like the flimsy stands that fold out. I have not had problems with flimsyness either, maybe i dont try hard enough. but I have cooked larger sized aluminum pots with it. either way, use common knowledge, this stove is really only meant for use with other ultralight (titanium, aluminum) pots."
Pros:
Cons:
"This is a great little stove. I have been using one for over a year now.
Its a little unstable in the stock version. I improved mine by adding a Brunton can stand from REI which fits the MSR fuel canisters perfectly. Also unlike a jetfuel you have to bring a lighter or matches.
Its super lightweight and small and a great option for the budget minded backpacker. I would get a small 1 or 2QT Open Country saucepan and you are good to go!"
Pros:
Cons:
"Its hard for me to give something 5 stars. But this does exactly what it says. It lights fast and cooks fast, plain and simple. It does not care for the wind and cold (10 or below) and can be a little shaky so make sure its on level ground. But it will still works well in those conditions. I have used it in the rain, mud, sleet, and snow. It has never failed me."
Pros:
"What a great stove! I live next to the Sangre de Cristo range in Colorado, and take regular back country trips. Up until two years ago my stove of choice was the MSR Whisperlite. That has changed. The size of this stove alone is a dream come true for the ultralight backpacker. The stove itself takes up almost no room, and weighs next to nothing. Set up and light time is twice as fast as my Whisperlite stove. And the stove takes no time at all to boil water, which saves fuel. I will admit that cooking over the stove has always been secondary to grill grates and a fire pit, which allows me to limit my fuel weight. That is exactly what makes this stove so great.
Stability and temperature control seem to be the only complaints about this stove. I must say, that no matter which stove you choose, finding a stable platform for the stove must be your first priority. That being said, I will admit that my whisperlite seems to be a bit more stable. As far as temperature control is concerned, the stove concentrates the flame on the center of the pot or pan. Because of this, the stove requires that you constantly watch and stir you food to keep it from burning, even at low temps. Windy conditions also seems to be a problem since you are not able to use a windshield on the stove. (A drawback to using any stove with the same style of fuel canister.) In my opinion, this only requires that you find a more sheltered campsite, or sit upwind from the stove to act as a windshield yourself. Also a great time to utilize the vestibule on your tent.
Overall, if weight and size are your main concern, I would highly recommend this stove. If you don't mind carrying a little extra weight, and spending a little more time setting up your stove, I believe the Whisperlite Internationale should be the only other stove you consider."
