"I purchased this to use with my MacPro for the purpose of hands free automatic backup using the Mac OS Time Machine software. I was using SuperDuper, and will probably continue to use it selectively for photo files to other HD's.I thought it took a long time for the Elements 2TB to do it's first backup. However, after it finished I realized it had backed up not only my primary HD but two internal and two external ones I had left attached to the MacPro. That frees up a lot of space for me to use on the older HD's.The Elements 2tb is very quiet and does it's job unnoticed. The tiny light is unobtrusive and won't light up the room all night, it is on the back side. Some complain the cord is too short, but for me it is perfectly long enough to reach where I have it placed near the computer. It appears to be about 3 feet in length. I trust the brand from past experience. I purchased it via JR .com which I have trusted for many years. I[...]. It is not a firewire device, but I am still satisfied with it's USB functioning performance for my needs, and I view it as a good trade off considering the price of 129.00 US for this much HD space.If you are a Mac user you will need to let your mac initialize it, but that only takes a few minutes, and is a cinch to do!"

"This external hard drive is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't want one that would mirror my internal hard drive. I just wanted one that would allow me to move the thousands of pictures etc that were clogging the internal drive. It allowed me to select the folders I wanted to move and moved them flawlessly quickly & quietly.



Easy setup, just connected it via USB to the computer and had another 2TB of memory instantly."

"I needed a larger capacity external hard drive for my backups. How disappointed I was to read that WD now has added their own so called backup software to all of their My Book hard drives among others. Then I read that the drive can not be formated nor can the backup software be removed. What a bummer!!!!

So I opted for WD's (low end) Element series HD with 2TB of capacity which as of now does not have the permanent backup software. So far it operates just great! And for the price you can't beat it."

"This is a perfect unit for backup. Lots of space for photos, documents, application data. Best Practice: use for backup, not just storage. Learned my lesson when hard disk in an external drive went bad (another brand) and lost all my photos. Don't put data here unless you have it somewhere else."

"The drive works fine, but it had to be reformatted (partitioned) before use on a Mac. I understand it being auto-formatted for a PC, but there should have been a manual, a disc or a pdf on the drive with instructions for setup for a mac. I ended up having to go to the WD website and searching for the instructions there. When I plugged in the drive it was in read-only mode and didn't have ANY visible files. I was irritated to have to play sleuth to get it set up.



Once I had the instructions, setting up the partition was extremely easy and fast and the drive worked well. I hope that after this initial speed bump that the drive will continue to work well!"

"Primarily used for personal file transfer, family photo and video storage. Operates quitely. The power indicator light should be located in front of the unit so the user can see it."

"The drive was very easy to install - just plug and play. I like the power save feature. Similar to my other iomega 250gb drive. I needed extra space and a backup for my primary drive and laptop and this fits the bill perfectly. I took me about 3h to backup around 300gb. My 20+ years experience with WD drives taught me that they have higher chances to fail after 3-5 years of use, but by then I'll probably be able to buy a 200TB to back it up for the same price!!!"
